The inaugural meeting was held on October
18, 1965 at the Château Laurier Hotel.
Sponsored by Toronto, we became the seventh
Canadian club and the 274th. Chapter of the
Association Internationale des Skål
Clubs (AISC). Initial membership was 22.
By 1969 we had grown to 34 and to 55 at our
30th. Anniversary in 1995.
Memorable Christmas galas provided extravagant
door prizes over the years, the best-remembered
during Brick Allan’s presidency (1970),
when Jane Tilden won two first-class tickets
to St. Lucia.
In 1972 the Sampan Restaurant hosted the Club
to a 14-course meal (that lasted from 1945
‘til after midnight), perhaps setting
an all-time record for our Club! Later that
year we welcomed members from across Canada
when we hosted the Second National Congress
at the Talisman Inn. This was the same year
that we purchased the President’s chain
of office.
In 1982, our representative to the National
Committee Carlo Bertasi was elected as a Director,
and three years later became its VP-Finance.
In 1989 & 1990 he served as President
of the National Skål Committee of Canada,
now known as Skål International Canada
(SICAN), and in 1990 he was elected President
of the North American Area Skal Committee
(NAASC).
In 1983 we were awarded the honour of staging
the 24th. North American Congress to be held
in 1985. Through the splendid cooperation
of our members and those in clubs throughout
North America, the May congress set a record
for attendance of 578 skålleagues.
Pre and Post congress tours allowed registrants
to visit Montréal, Toronto, and the
Baffin Islands Region of the Northwest Territories.
Our members and their families took up the
challenge to give a special welcome to our
guests by hosting over 100 early arrivals
to dinner and home or at a restaurant. Profits
realized from this meeting enabled our Club
to make a special contribution of $1,000 to
the Volckaert Fund. Also that year we welcomed
fellow skålleagues to special reception
held during Rendez-Vous Canada and for attendees
at the annual ACTA Congress.
October, 1985, saw a special celebration in
honour of our 20th. Anniversary as a Skål
Club. A gala evening recorded a 100 percent
turnout by our members who welcomed several
Past Presidents as guests. The evening featured
dinner followed by a “Pops” concert
at the National Arts Centre followed by a
champagne and dessert birthday celebration
at the Château Laurier.
In 1990 we organized and hosted the National
Congress attended by some 200 registrants
at the Holiday Inn Downtown.
Our club inducted its first lady members in
1993: Deborah Redmond, Manager of ITP Voyageur
Travel Services and Jacqueline Smith, Manager
of ANZA Travel, and in September they were
joined by Leslie Coates, President of Manotick
Travel.
Later that year eleven skålleagues spent
five days in Amsterdam and The Hague attending
Skål venues and in 1996 seven members
travelled to Italy dining with the Clubs of
Lombardia and San Remo.
In October, 1995, 96 skålleagues and
guests celebrated our 30th. Anniversary that
was attended by the Presidents of AISC, NAASC,
and NSCC.
Our golfing members have been regular participants
in the annual Jack Britton Memorial Tournament.
In 1997, Paul Simoneau was elected President
of the National Skål Committee of Canada
in the same year that we won the award for
Best Club in Canada – a feat repeated
in 1998!
In 1999, Jackie Smith was elected as our first
female President.
